Sembabule- The father of exiled General David Sejusa has appealed to President Museveni to forgive his son for the wrongs he might have committed and allow him return home from exile.

Mzee Peter Bwajoojo called on Museveni and Sejusa - the former bush war comrades-turned enemies, to reconcile.

Gen Sejusa fled to exile in April after writing a controversial letter which alleged there was a plot to assassinate senior government officials opposed to a purported Muhoozi Project, a perceived scheme by President Museveni to groom his son, Brig. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to succeed him. Mr Museveni has since said Sejusa's actions amount to treason.

"My message to the government is that someone should help these two old friends to reconcile. There was even a time years back when Tinyefuza had disagreed with Museveni and for some time he was on katebe [without assigned duties], but they reconciled. So I am sure that even this time they can be friends again," Mzee
Bwajoojo – who still refers to his son by the old name Tinyefuza – said.

Talking to the Sunday Monitor at his home in Kyamanyansi village, Lugusuulu Sub-county in Sembabule District, after the death of Sejusa's younger brother Dan Mutungi last week, Mzee Bwajoojo, said he has always known President Museveni as a kind and forgiving man. He also revealed the blood connection between his family and Mr Museveni.

Relationship with Museveni
"He is also my relative and I regard him as my own son. Tinyefuza's wife is the daughter of Museveni's aunt. The two [Museveni and Tinyefuza] have been friends for a long time. Even when Tinyefuza was going to join him in the liberation war [1981-86 NRA rebellion], I emphasised it to him to be loyal to Museveni and never to turn against him or even to betray him," Mr Bwajoojo said between a tone of sadness and remorse.

He praised Museveni for treating him and his family with respect and kindness whenever the President visited Sembabule.

"I don't know what has caused the sudden rift between the two old friends. I know Tinyefuza could have made mistakes since as a soldier there are laws that governed him and which he probably went against. But these are mistakes that Museveni can forgive because he has forgiven so many people before," Bwajoojo continued.

"He forgave Chris Rwakasisi [former Security minister in Obote's government] and Acholi and Langi people who used to fight him in the army. He accepted them back after he defeated them and they are now working well with him. He is even friendly to the members of Obote's family and the others," Mzee Bwajoojo added.
He added: "There is a very important reason why I want Tinyefuza to be forgiven. Long ago, all the land you see around here used to be under coffee. Coffee was my main source of income for all my children's education. But after some time, I became too old to supervise the coffee project. Tinyefuza took over the responsibility of providing for me.

He has been paying my hospital bills and he has been taking me to good hospitals in Kampala. Twice he took me overseas for medical treatment. He has been doing the same for my wife who has a broken backbone," Mzee Bwajoojo explained.

He added: "He has been helping his brother Mutungi by taking him to Butabika [Mental Rehabilitation Hospital] for treatment. He is now dead because Tinyefuza is in exile. May be he would not have committed suicide and would have lived a little longer," Mzee Bwajoojo said.

He said when his late son Mutungi returned from Kampala to settle home in Sembabule some years back, he had few property and was helped by parents to start a new life.
Mzee Bwajoojo said unfortunately Mutungi has died and left behind orphans who need school fees and other support yet Tinyefuza, who has been helping the family is now in exile and no longer give them such assistance.

For my sake
"So Museveni should forgive Tinyefuza for my sake. I don't even understand how and why the two old friends parted ways. When Tinyefuza completed his military training at Kimaka in Jinja, he came here and he told me he would never forget Museveni and that he would be loyal to him all his life. And I knew that it would continue that way because that is what I had also told him when he went to join Museveni in the bush war," the old man narrated.

"I am a born-again Christian. I believe in forgiveness, helping the needy, honesty and love for everybody."

Mzee Bwajoojo produced 15 children but said seven died and eight had survived, but lamented that one of the sons has now died.

State House responds
When the Presidential Press Secretary Tamale Mirundi was contacted for comment on the plea of Sejusa's father, he said the exiled General can reconcile with the Uganda government, but not President Museveni.
"That is reducing the issue to Museveni and Sejusa. If you reduce it to the two, where do you leave the military and Parliament that are against Sejusa? It is Sejusa to apologise to Uganda because one time he declared war on Uganda.

We have seen close relatives of Museveni involved in cases but Museveni hasn't intervened, he leaves the government institutions to handle. Sejusa has committed cases that will be dealt with by institutions," he said.
